The Trace of Absence Statement:
Geometry is fundamental in Iranian-Islamic art, where matter is sanctified through geometric forms. Girih tiles, which represent harmony, balance, and an intrinsic order free from chance or accident, embody this sacred geometry. The firm and rigid qualities of Girih tiles inspired me to use them as a basis for deconstruction. By twisting the Girih and challenging its rational geometry, I distorted its secure order, transforming it into a structure of distortion.
I created seven angles that, depending on the chosen perspective, can expand infinitely. The main structure is absent, yet its traces are visible within other structures. In “The Trace of the Absence,” I aimed to break away from the concrete order of geometry and the established truths in tradition, a process marked by desacralization and reconstruction. Any form of truth, bound to the viewer’s perspective, is fleeting, losing its order with each shift, only to gain a new construction.
This work reflects the multiplicity of truths and perceptions that emerge from contemporary understandings of truth, often in conflict with traditional worldviews. By appropriating the visual potential of these forms, my goal is to critique the conventional approach to geometry and its association with truth, while secularizing the sacred nature of geometric forms.
